Feminist Fridays: Scuse Me

10/27/2017

Today I'm going to feature song by Lizzo called Scuse Me.

Favourite Lyrics:

Feelin' like a stripper when I'm lookin' in the mirror
I'll be slappin' on that ass gettin' thicker and thicker

Oh! I love this refrain. I love that she unabashedly loves herself and all the curves!

I don't need a crown to know that I'm a queen

This line is great too.

I hope you enjoy the song!

Feminist Fridays: I'm Not Dancing

10/20/2017

One of my only frustrations about my first fashion show is that they didn't use any of the music I selected. :(

They asked if I had a few songs I'd like played and I carefully selected several songs I thought would be good based on sound and lyrics.

I do understand why they didn't play this one, since it's kind of obscure and not something a DJ is likely to have in their collection.

What's feminist about it?

I think to start with the video itself and the non-standard beauty shown with loose T-shirts, not overly made-up, or overly feminine.

And the lyrics, which I'll just say they are all favourites since there aren't many:

I'm not dancing. I'm fighting.
I'm not shining. I'm burning.
I'm not touching. I'm feeling.

First about I'm not dancing; I'm fighting. I've definitely felt that on the dance floor. I have had times where I was making more of conscious effort to fend off guys than to dance. I've had to fend off guys both from myself and from female friends who had come to the club with me.

I think shining while nice can also be seen as gentle, pretty, subtle. Burning is far more powerful and strong.

And I think women often are more about feeling, in general. I know that's my preference when dancing. I like to dance and I'm happy to dance with people. However, it's not dancing in contact with someone else. It's dancing near other people. I have done types of dancing that involve more contact, but at clubs I'm all about dancing without touching. It's all about that wonderful feeling.

Production Delays and Tales of Terrible Customer Service

10/18/2017

I ordered all of the supplies MONTHS in advance to make sure there would be no delays when I was ready to do a production run. Everything is here, except the size labels. :(

Dutch Label Shop looks good on their website and Etsy store. Their site says, "Production takes 7 days". If production only takes 7 days, then why are my labels taking MONTHS? I ordered the labels more than 4 months ago in JUNE.

I've contacted them a number of times about my order and I've gotten different explanations for the delays.

At first they said my shipment was lost in transit and they promised to reship ASAP in July.

That reshipment never arrived, so I contacted them again. This time they said my order was never shipped due to a "glitch". Again, they promised to reship ASAP.

Then a week later, they contacted me asking me for payment. I reminded them I had already paid for the order months ago. They apologized and promised to reship my order ASAP.

I asked when ASAP was; they didn’t answer.

One of the fundamentals of customer service is to set clear expectations and then meet them. As a customer service representative you provide an estimate when the problem will be solved. If that date cannot be met, you contact the customer, provide an explanation why the original date can’t be met, and provide a new date for resolution.

I asked for a clear estimate when the labels would be ready; they haven't been able to provide one.

I asked to talk to a manager; they ignored me.

I have no idea why the Dutch Label Shop would want to provide such terrible customer service to anyone, let alone a new clothing company. Yes, I'm small now, but I do have the potential to grow and I am someone in the industry who will talk to other people in the industry. Why would you want to give such awful service to a new customer?

I'm looking into alternatives. If you are a company who can make size labels like this and get them to me in a timely manner, please contact me!

Oh, the woes of becoming a clothing manufacturer...

Update (Nov. 1, 2017):
Good news! They got someone with customer service experience to take over who was able to make sure the labels got done and shipped. The labels have arrived and production can now finally begin. Yea!

This week I'm going to share something new I found, a comedy sketch!

If you haven't heard about the Harvey Weinstein scandal that made news this week, this is a good primer.

Feminist Fridays: NO

I got this in the www.lalena.me mailbox this week: "hello there how are you been doing there i hope we are all one"

Wow! It looks like the new male fan club has spilled over to my personal website.

Congrats guys you found it. Now read it. All of it. Check out my art. Watch those music videos. Like what you you like. Share what you think is cool.

But no, I'm not going to personally reply to a message like this from some dude who found a picture of me on the internet and is now messaging me on Facebook and my personal website. No guys, you will only get a public reply like this one.
Also, most of you seem to be in love with the pictures that aren't me! LOL

One guy sent me an image on Facebook saying he was in love with me because of this image.

Yes, that's my colleague who tested and modeled my dress for me. I agree the pictures are great. She looks gorgeous in my dress. I'll be posting more pictures of other models looking great in my dress soon!

In honour of the new male fan club (who all seem to have found the Hourglass Heaven pictures somewhere), I've decided to start something new: Feminist Fridays!

On Fridays I'll feature something I think is cool and fairly feminist. I think it's mostly going to be music videos, though some articles might make it too. If you have something to suggest, let me know.

To kick things off let's start here.

Pay attention boys! If you are male who found my pictures somewhere and you think I look attractive, thanks for the compliment. As for your questions about my age, my martial status, my phone number...this is my answer:
You might just want to follow me on Instagram, then you can just look at the pretty pictures.

My favorite lyrics:
If I want a man, then I'mma get a man
But it's never my priority
I was in my zone, before you came along,
Don't want you to take this personal

And her advice to other women:
All my ladies listen up
If that boy ain't giving up
Lick your lips and swing your hips
Girl all you gotta say is...

My name is NO
My sign is NO
My number is NO
You need to let it go
